Volodymyr Lytvyn, Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, stresses that amendments to the laws on corruption counteraction, introduced this week, will strengthen control over the expenditures of government officials.

V.Lytvyn made the foregoing statement in the interview to Rada television channel. He explained that the provision of this Law on obligatory financial monitoring of financial operations on the sum exceeding UAH 150 thousand is by no means directed against the citizens.

V.Lytvyn stated that many people had been saving money for their whole lives to buy real estate or a car, without using the services of financial establishments. "If this figure is lowered, most people will be subject to financial monitoring," the Head of the Parliament stated.

However, V.Lytvyn underscored that introduction of this regulation will strengthen control over the expenditures of government officials. According to the Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada, income tax returns of the government officials indicating the sum of expenditures may be compared with the prices of the purchased houses or cars. "If it will be clear that such expanses exceed the income, such government officials will be questioned," he stated.

The Head of the Parliament stressed that enactment of the Law should be followed by an extensive outreach campaigning among the government officials, officials with an equal status, and local self-government officials who should familiarize themselves with the law against receipt. "It will immediately strengthen the discipline of the government officials," V.Lytvyn declared.
